Carlo Di Roma Trio Binaural Eyeshadow in 003
What: Carlo Di Roma Eyeshadow Trio
Where: Dollar Tree
Price: $1.00

I stumbled across the Carlo Di Roma makeup display tucked away in the back corner of my local Dollar Tree. Okay, I moved last week, so it’s no longer my local Dollar Tree, but it was when I bought this a month or so ago. They have a lot of interesting things, some of which Recessionista at Nouveau Cheap has already reviewed. I’m going to review the “Vintage” lipliner/brush combo here pretty soon, I promise!
This company doesn’t put any actual color names on their makeup, but according to their catalog, this is 003. I guess that means they don’t name their colors at all. Too bad that the colors in 007 aren’t really my style; I could play Bond girl.
003 contains brown, taupe, and pink eyeshadow. I especially love the pink, but all three are pretty impressive. The eyeshadow is slightly shimmery, surprisingly highly pigmented for the price, and it feels so soft when you put it on. Its staying power amazes, too. It lasts all day with no creasing and very little fading. This little dollar store eyeshadow has actually become my go-to shadow over the past few weeks. I’ve been wearing it almost every day, and I couldn’t be happier with it.
If you have a Dollar Tree handy, check and see if they have any Carlo di Roma. This eyeshadow will be your best-spent dollar in a while.

L.A. Colors Mineral Eyeshadow in Bronze
What: L.A. Colors Mineral Eyeshadow in Bronze
Where Dollar Tree
Price: $1.00

This shade seems to be discontinued. All the mineral eyeshadows on L.A. Colors’ website come in two colors now. I suppose that’s to be expected with any makeup you find at Dollar Tree.
This eyeshadow applies smoothly, and isn’t gritty or streaky in the least. It stays put, too, as far as I can tell. There’s no creasing or migration to be seen. Unfortunately, there’s not much else to be seen, either.
In the container, this looks like a bold, shimmery bronze. It’s at least shimmery, but it would be an understatement to say this shadow isn’t highly pigmented. I tried to take a picture of me wearing it for this post, and it didn’t show up. Believe me when I say there isn’t a lot of color on my face for the eyeshadow to compete with, either. It’s a wash of subtle glitter with a hint of warmth but no real color. The effect isn’t unpleasant, but it’s not what you would expect.
This eyeshadow is nothing special, but it might fit the bill if you want some new single colors for everyday. Bronze was the only color my Dollar Tree had, but the selection at yours may vary. If these have, as I suspect, been discontinued to make room for the new doubles, you’ll probably find whatever other hues of this product L.A. Colors made.

e.l.f. elements Custom Compact
What: e.l.f. elements Custom Compact with Custom Eye Colors in Golden Glow, Moondust, Mocha, and Sage.
Where: K-Mart
Price: $1.00 each for compact and four eye colors

I’ve been wanting to try out e.l.f. for a while, to see if they’re as awesome for the price as everyone says. Finally, I found a K-Mart around here that carried it. (Though I almost didn’t find them. For some reason, K-Mart puts their cosmetics in the accessories section, not Health and Beauty. I hadn’t been in one since before Sears bought them, so I didn’t know this.)
First, I love the idea of this. I hate buying a compact of eyeshadow and only using a color or two out of it. (Note: e.l.f. makes lip colors and blush to go in the compact, as well. My K-Mart just happened to only have eyeshadow.)
Luckily, the execution is as great as the concept. The makeup fits nicely in the compact (which comes with an unexpectedly huge mirror), but it comes out pretty easily if you want to swap them out. The compact isn’t flimsy, either, though I was afraid it would be. It comes with an applicator with a sponge-tip at one end and brush at the other.
I was suitably impressed with the makeup itself. The eyeshadows are as highly pigmented as any other powder eyeshadow I’ve tried, and they go on smoothly. They’re very blendable, and I quite like the colors. (I tend towards earth tones, but e.l.f. has more than that to choose from.) The colors I chose are as follows, clockwise from the top: Moondust, Golden Glow, Mocha, and Sage.
The most fun part about this compact is choosing what goes in it. I’m going to get my hands on some of the lip color and blush to try them out, too.

N.Y.C. Smooth Mineral Starter Kit in Basic Brown, Part 2
What: N.Y.C. Smooth Mineral Starter Kit in Basic Brown
Where: Walmart
Price: $9.99

Image from Walmart.com

Image from New York Color
Today I’m taking a look at the N.Y.C. Smooth Mineral Loose Eye Powder in Cocoa Shimmer and Espresso, from the N.Y.C. Smooth Mineral Starter Kit. The full version of this product costs $6.99 and comes with a tube of Weather Proof Liner Sealer.
The kit comes with an applicator with a sponge tip on one end and a brush on the other. I haven’t tried applying it wet yet, but I think the Espresso shade would be especially suited for that. Applying them dry is a little tricky, because like any loose powder it’s easy to sprinkle them on your cheeks. Despite that, they stay put on your eyelids.
I really like the colors they used. Calling anything “Espresso” is an easy way into my coffee-loving heart, and the Cocoa Shimmer is much nicer on than it looks in the pot. I was afraid it was going to be way too glittery, but the shimmer is more subtle than that, and it’s more brown than gold in color.
I used them in combination, with the Espresso by my lash line and the Cocoa Shimmer on the lid, and I loved it. I’m kicking myself a bit for forgetting to get pictures.
